This portrait of Lily Pettigrew in albumen print is an early example of how commerical photography studios found their financial footing by selling pornography prototypes, sold under the premise of being 'artistic nude studies'. The photographs were expensive, and were purchased by wealthy collectors who invested into this new media via women's erotic labour.
